Nathan's other projects

Nathan contributes his time and effort to the following projects:
HERO - a project by Martin Firrell : HERO is an attempt to re-evaluate what we mean when we use the word hero. A project started by cultural activist Martin Firrell (www.martinfirrell.com) and taken up by people in more than 80 coutries, currently featuring Nathan Fillion, HERO asks the question: why are our heroes usually male, white, and violent; and airs the views of men, women, and children who have experienced a different kind of heroism, at home, at work, at war.

Kids Need to Read
Started by Nathan and his friend PJ Haarsma, an author, KNTR purchases books for libraries and schools in need:
When two friends get together and discuss something they are very passionate about, good things usually happen. The Kids Need to Read project was born from such a discussion. Inspired by the enormous amount of energy coming from their fans, Nathan and PJ established a program where profits could be used to purchase books for libraries in need. Money should never be used as an excuse when it comes to the education of our children.
Kids Need to Read donates from an official book list that includes a variety of well-reviewed titles for preschool to teenaged children. The foundation especially strives to donate books that appeal to reluctant readers.
Whenever possible, unused overstock is bought with the funds raised by Kids Need to Read, rather than first sale books. These are brand new books; however, the authors and publishers do not receive credit for sales on overstock. Since royalties are not paid on these books, Kids Need to Read's donation dollars buy more books for children.
"The Softwire" books are the series and game by PJ Haarsma that launched the KNTR project. New authors and books are being added.
